…And the Home of the Brave (1931)
The stylised depiction of a cigar factory, by Charles Demuth (1883-1935). The building was located in Demuth’s hometown of Lancaster PA, part of the local industrial landscape that attracted the artist’s eye in his final years. Demuth’s title is drawn from the last line of the US national anthem, a status only accorded to ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ in the year that Demuth painted this scene. He is thought to imply that for many workers, the factory was a new ‘home of the brave’.
