USA - San Diego Zoo - Gorilla

"I don't want this to be a world where apes are extinct. You look in their eyes and you know these are fellow beings. I don't want our grandchildren to talk about apes and elephants as if they're talking about dinosaurs."

-- John Scherlis, zoölogist

No classic New Year's picture for the last upload of the year.

In all but one aspects, today is just a day as any other. So why forget about the challenges we face everyday, if those challenges remain?

While some efforts are being done, the fact remains that the big apes face a bleak future in the wild. They are our closest relatives on this planet. Then what are other species to expect of us?

Continuing the uploads on the San Diego Zoo, this is one of the zoo's 10 (after female Alvila died at the age of 45 earlier this year) Western lowland gorillas. One of the easiest scientific names around: Gorilla gorilla gorilla :)

Couldn't find his name online, but he's a young silverback, possibly a blackback still. Anybody?
