Sadhu at Pashupati Temple, Kathmandu
"Sadhus or Hindu holy men wander the Indian subcontinent on a perpetual barefoot pilgrimage to holy places. Though they deliberately reject the conventions of the Hindu caste system, their own subculture involves an intricate network of sects and traditions. A sadhu's affiliation can be interpreted by his garments, by the implements he carries, and by the colored designs painted on his forehead." - Flickr.com user "jmhullot." It is difficult to differentiate between "true" sadhus and the many beggars posing as sadhus for money, especially since many sadhus' vows of renunciation require them to subsist on the charity of others.
Many sadhus have attempted to differentiate themselves from their opportunistic peers by utilizing their unique status to organize social services for their local communities. These sadhus have gathered large followings and, despite operating ashrams with large cashflows, continue to live according to their renunciate vows.
