1938 Sustaining Member (US Republican National Committee) - subscriber’s badge

John Hamilton (1892-1973), a Republican from Kanas was elected chairman of the Republican National Committee in 1936 and retained this role until 1940. In the meantime, he teamed up with Carlton G Ketchum (1892-1984) who had founded Ketchum Inc in 1919 and at this time one of the largest financial and advertising consultancies in the United States with special expertise in professional fund-raising. He was also a founder of the American Association of Fund Raising Counsel as well as being Finance Director of the Republican National Committee from 1937-1941 and again from 1949-1957.

Drawing on their political connections, professional expertise and media contacts; in 1937 they launched the Hamilton-Ketchum fund-raising campaign under the auspices of the Republican National Committee. The project was based on sustaining-membership which was geared up to collect large numbers of smaller donations/subscriptions from many members by means of local fund-raising drives and door-to-door solicitations. Paid-up Sustaining-Members were each given a membership card and an attractive enamel badge to identify themselves as such. Up to 1938, a total of $202,343 was reported as receipts from 6,367 sustaining-members and the numbers even greater for the following year.

The elephant remains the emblem of the Republican National Committee and has appeared on many of their campaign badges.
