Oliver Goldsmith commemorative plaque - Ardagh House (County Longford) Sunday 11 May 2014

Ardagh is an Irish Heritage Village about 7 miles outside Longford town that includes Ardagh House, built by the Fetherston family during the early 18th century.

The Fetherson family were landed gentry of Westmeath who had settled in Ardagh from the early 1700’s and lived in Ardagh House until the early 1920’s. By the end of the 19th century their estate extended over 11,000 acres that was sold off in smaller parcels of land during the early years of the Irish Free State. George Ralph Fetherston (1865-1923) was the last of his line to have connections with Ardagh and in 1927 the house and its grounds were sold to the Sisters of Mercy who ran it as a convent and St. Brigid’s domestic science school until 2007. I understand it still belongs to the Sisters of Mercy but no longer used as a college.
