The helicopter ordered in 1970 was built by Bell Aircraft and delivered to the U. S. Air Force in 1973. For most of the 1970s the aircraft was assigned to the 301st Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadron at Homestead Air Force Base, Florida. Around 1979, the aircraft was assigned to support the 308th Strategic Missile Wing by transporting equipment and personal to and from the eighteen Titan II missile silos in Arkansas. The aircraft was instrumental in the response to the disaster at the silo near Damascus, Arkansas in 1980.
