Watching the Watcher
I had been working with this pack of grey wolves in northern Minnesota for two years. In that time they had become accustomed to me being in the area with them. While aware of me, they went about their daily routine which is exactly what I wanted in order to photograph them in their natural behavior.
The alpha male is resting on a large boulder that was deposited when the glacier retreated some 14 thousand years ago. It was in a small open area in the forest allowing sunlight to fill the space at times making it a natural gathering place for the pack. While he reclined on the rock (watching me) the other members wandered around in the woods while the alpha female tended to the latest litter.
Soft autumn light filled the gathering spot giving me just the best texture to match the mood of the reclining male. After some time a sound or scent in the distance caught the attention of the alpha pair and with a short bark the pack headed off into the woods in that direction. I waited some time to make sure they had fully moved off and then got up and headed back to my car finished for the day.
