Part of my “Book Of Life” final project: In which I create scenes imagined from my favorite books. The book of choice for this project is The Feminine Mystique by Betty Friedan. A first draft concept for the final exercise recreating scenes from The Feminine Mystique by Betty Friedan. A cultural classic and a catalyst for second wave feminism.
While reading, I noticed a common theme of “performance” amongst the depicted women. I covered my face in plastic Saran-wrap, then layered makeup overtop to convey the performative mask worn by many women in heterosexual marriages. She must be “perfect”, she must be “plastic”, wearing a mask that is beautiful to her husband, male coworkers, and male family members, but she is covered up and oppressed. I showcased myself serving cake as well, to emphasize the act of her performance.
