Grey Squirrel Caching Acorn
Caching is an innate behaviour that many animals exhibit and involves hiding food for later retrieval, like us stocking a cupboard with food. By “Squirreling away” acorns and other nuts, Squirrels ensure a supply of food throughout the hard winter months. When burying food items they have been seen to “fake cache” if they think they are being watched by rivals.
This pretending to deposit food must help to confuse potential thieves and preserve their precious stocks.
