Bearded Reedling, Male, Panurus biarmicus

The Bearded Tit, now more often and probably more accurately called, Bearded Reedling, is a beautiful little bird of large wetland habitat. Very large areas of “Phragmites” reed beds are required for this species to survive. Because of this they are not a common bird, but, they are doing well where they do exist. They depend on the reed seed for food in the winter months, when their summer insect diet is in short supply. They are sociable birds living in small colonies and are a wonderful sight to see when moving through the winter reed beds.
