The Immaculate Conception

In 1652 Cano returned to Granada from Madrid and he took on the unfinished decoration of the cathedral. He renewed his activity as a sculptor, achieving the high aesthetic standard in such finely executed pieces as the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception. The wooden sculpture has a harmonious and fluid quality which invites the observer to survey it by walking around the object. The composition is perfect, complemented by the simple colouring scheme in blue and greenish tones, set off by lavish gilding. Only an artist practiced in both media could achieve such a perfect symbiosis of sculpture and painting.

Alonso or Alonzo Cano is one of the great Baroque sculptors of Spain - whose diversity of talent - as sculptor, painter, and architect - has given him the nickname of the "Spanish Michelangelo". A man of explosive temperament, he was active (successively) in Seville, Madrid, then Granada. A major figure in Spanish Baroque art, his most famous work of sculpture is The Immaculate Conception (1655, Granada Cathedral), while his best known paintings include Descent into Limbo (1640, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles) and The Miracle at the Well (1646-48, Museo del Prado, Madrid). His decoration of the western facade of Granada Cathedral is also highly acclaimed. In addition to his Baroque sculpture, Cano was also one of the most famous Baroque architects in Spain.

Alonso Cano (19 martie 1601 - 3 septembrie 1667), pictor spaniol, desenator, arhitect.

 

Nascut la Granada, a fost supranumit "un Michelangelo spaniol", fiind unul dintre cei mai talentati artisti ai Spaniei din secolul XVII. A lucrat in Sevilia si Madrid, fiind cunoscut in special pentru desenele sale, din care s-au pastrat doar aproximativ 60. Spre deosebire de artisti contemporani precum Zurbaran sau Velazquez, Cano a reusit sa isi formeze o clasa de succesori, care i-au continuat stilul.

 

Un temperament vulcanic, avea sa fie adesea izgonit din orasele unde lucra (sau este nevoit sa plece), fiind acuzat chiar ca isi ucisese una dintre sotii. In ciuda acestui temperament adesea violent, lucrarile sale se remarca prin liniste si echilibru.

 

Si-a inceput pregatirea la Sevilia, sub indrumarea lui Pacheco, alaturi de Velasquez. Studiaza si sculptura, cu Montanez, si va ramane in Sevilia intre 1614 - 1638. Pleaca apoi la Madrid, unde este pictor al ducelui Olivares si restaureaza mai multe lucrari din colectia regala a lui Filip IV.

 

Descopera astfel lucrarile pictorilor venetieni din secolul XVI, al caror stil ii va influenta puternic urmatoarele compozitii. Din 1652 lucreaza la Granada, unde realizeaza si proiectul pentru fatada catedralei (1667), o capodopera a arhitecturii in stil baroc. Devine preot in 1658, pentru a putea continua lucrul la catedrala. Astazi aici se pastreaza o parte din lucrarile de pictura si sculptura realizate de Cano, intre care o statuie de lemn, Imaculata Conceptiune (1655), considerata capodopera artistului.
