It conveys the novels gothic genre and makes reference to its plot without giving too much away. I also think this cover demonstrates how visual communicators can choose techniques and visual language to suit projects. McLarens use of relief print is perfect for Victorian literature because printed covers became popular in the 19th century as the use of cloth coverings became common.
