Cognitive dissonance

This piece “cognitive dissonance” symbolises the result of restricting freedom of expression. This illustrative piece reflects cognitive dissonance and a conflict of belief and behaviour. In the modern world regardless of how hard we try to stick to our beliefs we are pushed an agenda; which prohibits us from matching our behaviours with our beliefs. Many of our instinctive behaviours and beliefs are disrupted by the modern precipitous lifestyle that doesn’t allow time for reflection. Moments of presence are replaced with scrolling on social media meaning we begin to feed our identity with everything apart from what’s inside of ourselves. Our identities have become materialised creating a big disconnect from our human nature. The more we try to make our beliefs match our behaviour the more we are outcasted by society ;as today’s common belief is that there is only one means of success and fulfilment; and that is materialism or power.

Furthermore , the colour scheme of black and white represents the bleak future of the world if we don’t start living our truths and following our beliefs. The eyes symbolise a phone screen because our attention is always on everyone else’s lives but our own. In addition, the cogs represent having to work like clockwork to fit into society and the cracks represent the effect that can have on a persons well-being.
