Coyote and White-tailed Deer buck

A Coyote moves past a White-tailed Deer buck, checking it out for signs of weakness. In this instance the deer looks strong and healthy, but the small canids will cooperate to take down an unhealthy or old deer. This scene took place during a Canadian winter, which presents challenges for many species including finding food and staying warm. The setting was Fish Creek Provincial Park, a protected area which is now surrounded by the large city of Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
