Mat Weight in the Form of a Bear

This Mat Weight in the Form of a Bear was crafted in China during the time of the Western Han Dynasty ( 202 BC-AD9). Bear imagery during this time was a sign of heroic power. The Bear is made out of gilt bronze. This item was purchased by The Cleveland Museum of Art by the John L. Severance Fund. The accession number is 1994.203.
