Rails and Road on Sheppey
Queenborough Rolling Mill was built in the 1970s specifically to recycle used rails into reinforcing bar rods for the construction industry. Much of this was brought in by sea through Queenborough wharf and carried along a one mile branch line to the mill using a variety of old locos.
Here we see another load of rails heading from the wharf in September 1987 behind ARMY 223, built as Drewry 2176 / Vulcan Foundry 5257 for the MOD in 1945 and sold into Industrial service from MOD Ashchurch in 1985. It was sidelined from 1990 to provide some spares for a sister loco working here.
The Rolling Mill ceased production in 2013 and the loco was saved for preservation on the Lavender Line at Isfield.
