Tennent’s Sentinel 2

The Whifflet Foundry of R.B. Tennent & Co was famous in the 1970s for its small fleet of Sentinel vertical boilered steam locos. These were used to shunt heavy loads around the works which was a leading producer of Rolls used by steelworks to roll their steel output.

When it was time to replace the steam locos they purchased some secondhand Sentinel chain driven diesels from British Steel at Redcar, including this one, Sentinel 10026 of 1960.

This one looked a bit odd, with no buffers fitted to one end of the loco, seen here in September 1987 some 7 years before the foundry closed and the loco was scrapped. This was not such a handicap here, with all wagons coupled to the other end of the loco and moved around the site via a headshunt behind the photographer.
