Great Northern Hotel, Peterborough, 20 Apr 1980
The Great Northern Hotel was built in 1852 directly opposite the Great Northern Railway's station. The ground floor is in rusticated stone with a projecting porch over the main entrance. The upper floors are in brick separated by stone bands. The hipped roof and tall chimneys give the well-proportioned three storey building an air of dignified solidity. The rear extension, with its flat roof and much lighter-coloured brick, was still fairly new when these photos were taken. It remains to be seen if it will weather to blend in better with the original building.
