The insane war, 1914-1918........Part 4

And what about the Allied staff in the heat of the battle?

These stayed in luxurious country houses and castles far away from the front lines and feasted on lavish dinners, had time enough to have amorous relations and did not care about their men fighting in inhumane conditions.

A staff officer of butcher General Haig visited the battlefield after the end of the 3rd battle of Ypres and whispered with a sob: "My God, did we let our men fight in it?"

The butcher Genereal Haig never visited any battlefield because by facing injuries, deaths and blood would make him sick and not concentrate on his task.

The French Commander-in-Chief Joffre forbade his staff to report him the number of deaths, especially to show him the deaths because this only distracted him.

With the Allies, the army top was usually formed as the usual career perspective of the second son of the great noble families.

It could be that the would-be militairy leader was intelligent, like Winston Churchill, but it didn't have to be.

Those who wanted to climb up did not need brains but money, connections and experience in fox hunting....
