Six Pounds

In the 1950s, six pounds had much greater purchasing power than it does today. For example, it could cover:

- A week's worth of groceries for a small family.

- A few gallons of petrol (gasoline).

- A ticket to a West End theatre show, with change to spare.

- Several pints of beer at the pub.
