Wenn man Vögel im Flug dabei beobachtet wie sie nahezu mühelos durch die Luft gleiten könnte man glatt vergessen, dass die Schwerkraft für alle gilt. Es wird einem aber wieder bewußt, sobald man sieht daß auch Vögel Aufwand treiben müssen wenn sie vom Boden starten. Die Tricks um sich in die Luft zu schwingen sind bekannt: gegen den Wind und mit Anlauf ist es leichter. Wie man das macht zeigt die Silbermöwe im Foto ganz anschaulich.
When you watch birds in flight, gliding through the air almost effortlessly, you could easily forget that gravity applies to everyone. But you become aware of it again when you see that birds also have to make an effort when they take off from the ground. The tricks for getting into the air are well known: against the wind and with a running start it works better. The herring gull in the photo shows how this is done very clearly.
