It's all about the light...
Basstölpel Profil / Northern Gannet profile / in explore 20220823
Kurzfristig habe ich es diesen August nach Helgoland geschafft, wo ich die Gelegenheit hatte ein paar Bilder von Basstölpeln zu machen. Ich sage ausdrücklich "ein paar", denn wer wie ich an einem sonnigen Tag mit dem normalen Tagesausflugsschiff übersetzt hat quasi eine Garantie exakt dann auf der Insel zu sein, wenn das Licht am härtesten und am häßlichsten ist. Nach etwas experimentieren an der Brutkolonie mit verschiedenen Aufnahmewinkeln und -positionen entschied ich mich dafür das Problem mit Licht, Schatten und Farbe frontal anzugehen. Das Profil hier entstand im totalen Gegenlicht. Um den maximalen Kontrastumfang des Sensors zu nutzen habe ich die die Belichtung so gewählt, dass ich dicht an ISO 100 herangerückt bin. Das Meer liegt mehrere hundert Meter hinter dem Tölpel, die runden Lichtreflexe auf den Wellen in den Schattierungen von Blau bis Weiss passen m.E. gut zum blauen Augenring des Vogels. Deshalb habe ich dieses Bild für meinen Fotostream ausgewählt.
Um das Gesicht des Basstölpels besonders detailreich sehen zu können, drückt die Tasten l (kleines L) und F11. Beim vergrößern nur durch Anklicken gehen viele Details verloren.
On short notice I made it to Helgoland this August, where I had the opportunity to take a few pictures of gannets. I specifically say "a few" because anyone who, like me, travels on a normal excursion boat on a sunny day has a quasi-guarantee of being on the island exactly when the light is at its hardest and ugliest. After some experimentation at the breeding colony with different shooting angles and positions, I decided to tackle the problem with light, shadows and colour head-on. The bird's profile here was taken in total backlight. In order to utilise the maximum dynamic range of the sensor I chose the exposure so that I came close to ISO 100. The sea is several hundred meters behind the gannet, the circular light reflections on the waves in a plethora of blue to white tones go well with the blue eye ring of the bird in my opinion. That's why I chose this image for my photo stream.
