Marmite - You either love it or hate it!

Marmite is one of those foods that you either love or hate and many think of it as to being a particularly English thing but there are different versions across the world, with the most well known being Vegemite in Australia, a newcomer since the 1920’s.

It is a yeast extract, originally a bi-product of the brewing industry. The fact that this yeast extract was discovered by a German scientist is little known before it began to be made commercially in England in Victorian times. It is rich in assorted vitamins with a strong umami flavour and apart from having it on toast is very useful as an additive in cooking.

The following is from the Marmite website..............

The genetics boffins over at DNAFit carried out a little investigation for us, on why some people are lovers, and others are haters.

250 people provided a cheeky little mouth swab for us to analyse. Some very clever people then extracted the DNA from the samples to identify single nucleotide polymorphisms (that’s ‘genes’ to you and I) associated with Marmite taste preference. Those poor haters, they can’t help it. It’s in their DNA...............

So there you are, it’s in your genes!
