Grass snake (Natrix helvetica) 2020-08-29. Parc Slip, Aberkenfig, South Wales.

Another one from my archive.

Image cropped and reprocessed using Adobe Lightroom.

A few quick shots as it paused in the water and I was so lucky to get the reflection of its head and tongue. Certainly testing the limits of the camera's zoom.

Grass snakes are non venomous and are found throughout most of Wales and England but not in Scotland or Ireland. They are not easy to find, are very shy and will quickly retreat if disturbed. A fully grown adult can reach a length of about 1.5 metres. They are excellent swimmers and feed on frogs, toads, newts and occasionally small fish and mammals. It is egg laying and only a small number of young reach adulthood as they are subject to predators such as foxes and birds of prey. A full lifespan can vary between 15 to 20 years or so.
