MARC train SDG #11

This picture shows a commuter train (MARC commuter rail), which I take every morning to get to school. This picture aligns with the SDG goal of sustainable development, goal 11. Many people take this train into DC for work, some even coming as far as West Virginia to do so. The tickets are affordable when bought for a monthly pass, which gives the people who ride the train an incentive to stay. Transfer to metro bus or rail is included with a monthly pass. All of these features encourage people to take public transportation because it helps save money, to the point of making it more costly to drive one's own car to work everyday. This in turn reduces congestion on the road, and generally the amount of cars regularly pumping gases into the atmosphere. This reduction leads to cleaner air for those in cities. The metro connects to many places in the DMV area, and with MARC rail reaching all the way out into West Virginia, a lot of unsustainable transportation practices can be avoided. Companies such as Dunkin Donuts have also started catching on to the idea, offering reduced drinks on certain weekdays for public transit commuters. If more people decide to ride these trains in the future, woodlands do not have to be destroyed to do so. Another traincar can be added on, and the same effect is achieved. This reduces the amount of deforestation and altering of the land that occurs in the interest of transportation. Additionally, people paying into the system consistently ensures that the companies will continue to improve and offer benefits to keep customers. While this practice relates to goal 11, there is still much improvement to go. The advertising for these programs is not widespread, and most people who have a car will not bother to look at the benefits of public transportation. Additionally, relying on train schedules and bus schedules is very inconvenient for a lot of people, which means that they may also decide not to take public transportation. Even with all of this in mind, benefits added to public transportation is still a step in the right direction.
