National Service: At home on a weekend leave pass.
This photo was taken during my 2 years National Service in the army, from 5th January 1956 to January 1958. I was home on leave during a weekend pass granted to me for a 36 or 48 hours time limit . ( Not granted for a weekend when a regimental inspection of the barracks was due at times. )
You had to return back to your barracks by midnight on a Sunday evening. If you were not back by that time you would then be charged as being A.W.O.L. ( Absent without leave. ) This would result to you be being marched in front of your Commanding Officer for him to decide what punishment to award you for this severe offence . I had a very near miss once when this motorcycle broke down just outside of the Bicester town in the dark , but I just managed to report back there shortly before that midnight deadline time !
