hever castle: in the footsteps of anne boleyn

The Bullen family, the name later changed to Boleyn, owned Hever Castle in the 15C and it later became the childhood home of Anne Boleyn who would become Henry VIII's second wife and queen of England for just 1000 days before being executed, claimed to be guilty of adultery and treason. To be able to divorce his first wife, Catherine of Aragon, to marry Anne, Henry altered the history of the country by splitting from the Roman Catholic church and forming the Church of England.

This garden perhaps recreates the environs of when Anne lived here and received numerous love letters from Henry while resisting his advances prior to marriage.

In more recent times, the castle was acquired by Lord and Lady Astor who restored the castle and added the Astor Wing, a 'Tudor Village', a lake and magnificent gardens, all at phenomenal cost, imagination and care, and which now houses a high quality hotel.
