Station Saturday

For Station Saturday here's a look across Silver Lake at the elegant former Duluth, Winnipeg and Pacific Railway depot which dates from 1913 and once housed the railroads dispatchers on the second floor. The last passenger train departed on July 1, 1961 and five years later the station was sold for reuse and today is home to Northern State Bank of Virginia and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. Downtown Virginia was once laced with rails and had depots belonging to Great Northern and the Missabe that have unfortunately been lost to time and today there are no tracks at all in the center of Virginia though CN's ex DWP main to the west of town is busier than ever.

Rising beyond is the Hotel Coates which opened in 1951 on the site of the Fay Hotel, which burned down in 1943. It was named for Albert B. Coates (1869–1922), a mine owner, school board clerk, and philanthropist. The hotel remains open to this day and is now a Quality Inn and Suites.

If anyone has any later day photos of trains in downtown Virginia or knows when the last train passed through here I'd love to see them.
