Grape Vines (Vitis vinifera)
The Eco-Justice Center has chosen plants that compliment sustainability. These include a variety of grapes that include: Marquette, Sabrevois, King of the North, Frontenac Gris, Bluebell, Somerset, and Reliance. Growing healthy plants without using toxic chemicals is not easy and takes knowledge. Grapes can be susceptible to fungal disease. To help prevent "botrytis bunch rot" growers can incorporate natural sulfur in place of chemical fungicides. Another preventive method is to incorporate trellises and to remove the lower leaves where the grape clusters are growing. To reduce water usage, some growers in California have adopted dry farming methods. Additionally, mechanical cultivation is preferred over the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers. The need for insecticides can be reduced or eliminated with biodiverse farming that encourages natural predators
