Eastbourne on a warm Spring day looking north-east from the pier, East Sussex, England.

Commentary.

Too many of Britain’s resorts have been allowed to become downright shabby, run-down, lacking in investment, renewal and renovation.

The move from British holidays to vacations in Mediterranean climes, on package deals in the 1960’s and 1970’s, has served a legacy that is still being suffered by some British resorts.

There are of course a good number of exceptions and this image shows one case in point, namely, Eastbourne in East Sussex.

Following a general decline up to the 1980’s or 1990’s in some cases, investment from local businesses, entrepreneurs and the Local Council has re-gained a smart, “cared-for” environment that pleases the eye.

Its promenade of mostly Georgian and Regency frontages is elegant and stylish.

Gardens along the promenade are spectacular in spring and summer.

The splendid pier is bright, renovated and vibrant.

The beaches are clean, popular and extensive with over five miles of groyned sections.

At its western end numerous paved switchbacks descend the "cliffed" terrain with fine views towards the imposing 550-foot cliffs of Beachy Head.

At its eastern end the Redoubt Fort, Martello Towers and green spaces provide interesting and pleasant focal points.

There are many fine hotels and ample Guesthouse accommodation.

Annual events like the Devonshire Park Tennis Tournament and the Air Display pull in many visitors.

In this shot, the gardens, promenade, and beaches

present themselves as I have described-

a credit to this East Sussex seaside resort.
