Silver-washed Fritillary. argynnis paphia.
Tricky customer, very mobile, never resting or nectaring for long.Largest of our fritillaries.
Been after getting a close view of this species for three years now,had become one of my nemesis butterflies.Getting close with a macro lens, usually deep in brambles I found almost impossible.
Even if I got close enough, they never settled for long and were away even before I could raise my camera. This is a female,I much prefer the underwing colours and patterning of this butterfly, soft subtle greens, ochres, raw sienna and a touch of burnt umber. All softly blended amongst the very prominent veins.I much prefer the females colouring to the male.Absolutely stunning.
So..I was really pleased when I had positioned myself deep in some Brambles in the vain hope I might be lucky and a Silver- wash would land on a blossom, when one landed right next to me and I got a shot...at last..!
Shot taken on the hottest day of the year, the sun was high, making a contrasty scene, but, sometimes you have to accept what nature has for you. I also saw four Purple Emperors, and, many White Admirals...also a nemesis of mine....will get close enough one day.
Please view large..amazing scale patterns and texture on this stunning butterfly. Many thanks to everyone who takes the time to look at ,fave, and comment.
