To be, or not to be—Havin' a baby?

This is the dilemma facing Radi, a silverback gorilla. The Species Survival Plan (SSP) program has recommended Makena as a candidate to have a baby. Now it is up to Radi to plant the seed. But, there are a couple of possible problems. First, Radi’s urge to mate may have withered some since he last fathered Masika. But that can be difficult to tell since Radi prefers to mate in the darkness of night, so no one knows for sure what he is doing. But blood tests on Makena show that she is not pregnant. Secondly, Radi’s current girlfriend may be a problem. Radi sired Masika with Makari, and now Makari does not want to give up her man. Anytime Makena tries to solicit Radi’s interest, Makari reminds Radi that he is still hers ….
