Raining Stars

Night Photography on the Alps

This is the Fort Malamot, located at 2,917 metres (9,570 ft) on the top of Mont Malamot (also called Pointe Droset in French).

It is a large fortification built by the Italian Regio Esercito in 1889, on two floors, which could house some 200 troops. The area was further fortified in 1932-1940 during the construction of the Alpine Wall: an Italian system of fortifications -along the 1851 km of Italy's northern frontier- built in the years leading up to World War II, under the direction of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini.

Photo taken at night, long exposure, with the desire to obtain a sort of symbolic "shower of stars" above this ruined construction.

On the left, the west face of Mount Rocciamelone (Italy). The little dot of light, halfway up, is the refuge Stellina.

In the distance, the light pollution of the upper valley of Susa.
