The Legend of White Snake (白蛇傳), Yangliuqing (杨柳青)
Chinese folktale about a scholar who falls in love with a beautiful woman, only to find she is a snake spirit in human form. A Buddhist monk kidnaps the scholar – in some versions to protect the scholar's soul, though in other versions the monk is portrayed as a jealous villain – but after many adventures the lovers are reunited.
Typically for Yangliuqing designs, the print is very detailed, large – around 60cm x 100cm – and overpainted by hand on a woodblock-printed outline and base colours. The woodblock would have been made from several planks joined together, not from a single huge board.
The design dates to the Qing dynasty, but this is a modern print published by the Yangliuqing New Year Picture Store, Tianjin (whose name appears lower right).
Bought in the UK, 2016, but previous owner bought it in Hong Kong, probably at Mountain Folkcraft.
