Manipulating the Self – 1970

This work began as a mail-art project in which General Idea solicited friends and collaborators to photograph them themselves in this unusual position. The participants are at once “holding and being held” – an idea that comes from Gestalt psychotherapy. The project points towards future works by General Idea that question the relationship between subject and object.
