Meet The Platypus

Platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus), sometimes refered to as the duck-billed platypus, is a semiaquatic egg-laying mammal endemic to eastern Australia, including Tasmania. Together with the four species of echidna, it is one of the five extant species of monotremes, the only mammals that lay eggs instead of giving birth.

Platypus Fast Facts

•The Platypus and Echidna are in their own order of mammals called 'monotremes' because they actually lay a tiny egg not live young.

•Platypus males have spurs on their legs that have a painful venom in them but they are so shy you would never naturally get close enough to be concerned.

•The bill of the Platypus contains electro-receptors that help it find invertebrates at the bottom of rivers and waterholes.

•You can find Platypus all along the east coast of Australia including Tasmania. Dawn and dusk are the best times to spot them.
