Red Racer Vol. 4 #25: The Man Known As Zoom Pt. 3

Iron Heights Penitentiary-2342 hours

The darkness of his cell once bothered Leonard Snart. It doesn’t anymore though. He recalls the first time he got arrested, at a mere sixteen years old. His father had gone on a drunken splurge that night and started shouting at his little sister, Lisa. She was only four, and was so scared. Len watched with horror as his dad slammed his hand against her face. He remembers his rage consuming him, and in a fit of anger he jumped onto his dad, pulled him down, and began beating him. Later that night, he was found hiding out in a diner outside of Keystone and taken into custody on charges of assault. Juvenile detention helped Len get comforted to the dark, along with pain and cold. After a month, he was let back out and behaved as well as he could. Once he turned eighteen, he grabbed Lisa and left while his dad was robbing a party store. Clarence Snart would be caught that night and sentenced to life for multiple offences. They never went back. Lisa moved in with their aunt in Central while Len spent some years working storage at a S.T.A.R. Labs warehouse for easy cash before leaving and starting a small crime organization. It all changed for him, though. That night when the S.T.A.R. Labs particle reactor changed everything. It released a wave of energy that hit Len, knocking him into the cold storage unit at a place he was hitting. When he awoke, he saw he now had the ability to create blasts of ice from his hand.

He looked down and focused on his hand. A dim blue light attempted to envelop his hand. After one second however, it went out. He groaned and rubbed his hand along his face. When his powers began fading, he sought help from S.T.A.R. It turned out that his blood had began to reject and destroy his metahuman cells, causing his powers to go berserk. In one last swansong, he attacked the people who gave him the news and took three inventions of theirs. That’s when he met her...The Flash. She came out of nowhere, zooming into the lab like a red bullet. They fought for one second before he got the upper hand. Whoever she is, she wasn’t an experienced fighter. So how did she end up stopping him? Especially with his newly formed Rogues? His mind flashed to that night when they fought and remembered how he felt that night. So much pain and fury. He once again felt his face, and ran his fingers across several scars on his face. The ice that had covered his head once his powers finally gave out had been removed soon after he was arrested, but he didn’t go unscathed.

His thoughts escape him when he hears a distant rumble from within the prison. He gets up and tries to peer out his door. Guards run by him, shouting and drawing their weapons. One stops in front of Len’s cell and begins to open fire. Suddenly, a scarlet ball of lightning surrounds the guard and he drops, dead. The ball then appears in front of him and stabilized into a man dressed in black armor. Red and black electricity sparked around him, and he stared at Len with scarlet orbs for eyes. His hand moved down to the door and pressed against it. The door began to shake violently before it crumbles to the ground like dust. The being seemed to grin at Len from under its mask before handing him an object. Len looks down and smiles slightly. His cold-gun, with what seems like an upgrade. He points at one of the guards running towards them and fires, encasing him in a thick barrier of subzero ice. The figure points him to the end of the hall, and he sprints to the area. While he’s running by, he glances at the bodies of the guards and sees projectiles sticking out from them. Some have shards of glass, while others have boomerangs.

Once Len got to the end of the hall, he couldn’t believe it. There was a dead end. Nothing was at the end except for a large pane of glass (likely the observation room) and cells. He turned around and leaned against the window, growling in defeat. What he didn’t expect was to feel a hand grab him and pull him through the glass. He fell through and fell onto the floor of what looked to be somewhere underground, an old storage room in the subway system, perhaps. He heard a screeching sound above head. Definitely subway system. A cough came from behind him, and he looked to see a man standing there. From what he’s heard, this must be the Mirror Master. Next to him was a girl in a black suit holding a boomerang. She looked at him and winked.

“‘Ow you doin’, lad?”

“What is this?!” Len yelled, but a rushing sound stopped him. The black form appeared from the other side of the glass and dropped three smaller (compared to him) forms. Len immediately recognized them as his fellow Rogues, Mick and Mardon, and Jesse James, the infamous Trickster. The black form stood in front of all of them and grinned.

“Hello, my friends. Now starts a new era. The return and rebirth of the Rogues. Now tell me…

“Who wants to kill the Flash?”

Thanks for reading, guys! Just a little heads up, this is the first issue under a new schedule I'm going to have. Next Sunday (hopefully) will be a new installment of Fantastic Four, while the Sunday after will be RR. So the two series will alternate.
