Ceraunius Tholus - Mars Express

HRSC mosaic of the Martian shield volcano Ceraunius Tholus. This volcano measures about 130 km from end to end and stands about 5.5 km above the surrounding Tharsis highlands. The nature of the large canyons that run from the central caldera into the crater at top left are unknown. One possibility is that it represents a large fissure in the mountain that channeled lava downslope. Another possibility is that heating caused the catastropic melting of an ice cap on the mountain during warmer, wetter times.

This image is a mosaic of images taken over three separate orbits. These images were acquired on Mars Express' 7330th, 7355th, and 7380th orbits of Mars, between September 19 and October 4, 2009.
