Red-necked Grebe. Burton Riggs Nature Reserve, Seamer, North Yorkshire. DSC_9682.jpg
I'd never seen a Red-necked Grebe before and they are only winter visitors to England, so the rare chance of seeing one in breeding plumage was a treat not to be passed up.
I had planned to drive up to Burton Riggs on Monday, but woke up to a severe bout of ME post exertional malaise, which put a stop to any activity that day.
However, I did manage to drive up yesterday. The bird was particularly elusive, disappearing for long periods, presumably for a kip after feeds and by mid afternoon I was beginning to despair that I wasn't going to see more than very distant views. However, having been ensconced in a quiet and secluded spot on the bank for well over an hour, I and several people who had joined me were eventually rewarded with a lengthy show from this beautiful bird.
One of the highlights was when it suddenly and loudly began calling, in this shot.
Thank you for your faves and comments, much appreciated
