Feeding time
The Grafelijkheids Dunes near Den Helder form the northern part of the North-Holland dunes. These dunes were once a separate island, Huisduinen.
Due to dehydration from water exploitation and then a sudden rise in the groundwater level, vegetation in the Grafelijkheids Dunes has gone wild. Lots of rare plants such as orchids disappeared. Instead, thick growth of bushgrass and creeping willow grew. Scottish Highlanders, Dexter cattle and ponies were released. The area is surrounded by a fence to keep the livestock from wandering away.
