I M A G I N E (Explore 09/12/16 #44)

Strawberry Fields, Central Park, New York

This memorial mosaic, in the style of a Portuguese pavement, is situated in an area of Central Park known as Strawberry Fields as a tribute to the late Beatle, John Lennon who was shot dead on this very day in 1980 outside the Dakota Building where he lived with his wife Yoko Ono.

I had researched a lot of material for this upload but in the end felt it would detract from the simplicity of the image. It's one of my all time favourite pictures, not because of any photographic qualities, but how understated it all is for a man that influenced the world musically. The original version in buried in my New York album somewhere but I felt it deserved a little reworking. Taken back in 2012 when we visited New York with friends for Christmas and New Year, Central Park is always best visited on a Sunday when New Yorkers come out to play.

Considering the number of people in the park, the memorial is exactly as we found it, not staged, not arranged, just a case of waiting for a brief moment to take a picture when the crowds thinned. Often you can find the memorial completely decked in flowers with pictures of John and the other Beatles and the odd CD, but on this day just a solitary perished rose. It symbolises for me a life tragically cut short for no good reason.

Had John Lennon still been alive today, who knows what other classics he might have penned.... Imagine.
