Camping Under the Stars

A wide 10mm / 25s shot showing a portion of the Milky Way as viewed from my camping spot at Pico de La Cruz (alt. 2351m) along the rim of the Caldera de Taburiente on the Island of La Palma (Canary Islands).

A meteor at centre as well as faint zodiacal light can be seen on the right and above the foreground. The Pleiades star cluster is on the right, and the faint smudge of our neighbouring Andromeda galaxy is at the very top centre of the frame. This cross section of our Milky Way galaxy is fainter than that with the hub which was already below the horizon at the time. A red filtered headlamp was used to "paint" the foreground without compromising my night vision.

Conditions were perfect, and with the exception of the faint zodiacal light there was no moon or light pollution. It was, however, quite windy and chilly.

Note: the "ghost" effect of the signpost and tent was caused by the fluttering of the tent in the wind during this single long exposure.

I visited the island of La Palma (Canary Islands) to attend the "Astromaster" advanced landscape - astrophotography timelapse workshop.
