San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore
the church of San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore was built in the 16th century on a pre-existing building from the Carolingian era, formerly the site of the most important female monastery in the city belonging to the Benedictine order. The works began in 1503 and the complex was completed in 1574, the year in which the facade of the church was completed. The real treasure of this building is the splendid cycle of frescoes which were entrusted to painters from the school of Leonardo da Vinci, a cycle which has led this monumental complex to be nicknamed "the Sistine Chapel of Milan".
