Penneshaw Dudley District Hall erected 1961 replacing the demolished Penneshaw Institute Hall of 1911, Kangaroo Island South Australia

Dudley District Hall

This hall was opened by The Minister of Agriculture, the Hon D N Brookman MP, 22 September 1961. The building incorporates the Penneshaw Rural Transaction Centre and was opened by the Hon Wilson Tuckey MP, Minister for Regional Services, Territories and Local Government, 27 September 2002.

The Dudley District Hall at Penneshaw took the place of the earlier Penneshaw Institute Hall built 1911 and demolished in the 1960s after being deemed unsafe.

*New Penneshaw Institute Hall opened

For some considerable time past residents of Penneshaw and district have been working hard to erect the much-needed new Institute Hall, and Thursday last saw their efforts completed, and a new and commodious hall at their disposal.

Arrangements had been made for the members for the district to be present and open the hall, but it being impossible for them to attend, that honour fell to Mrs W Howard, who in a brief and well-chosen speech declared the hall open.

At the dinner a happy time was spent by all attending, the success of which is due to the energetic way in which the ladies worked together in preparing for the event and waiting on the tables.

In the evening a grand concert, followed by a supper and dance, was held, at which Mr Howard presided. Mr L E Clark gave a short address and read the balance-sheet. He announced that there was still a debt on the building but felt assured that it would be soon wiped off by a continuance of the splendid support which had been accorded in the past.

A pleasant programme followed with supper after: dancing was then begun and proved a very pleasant termination to an enjoyable day.

We understand that about £20 was netted on the day's proceedings. [Ref: The Kangaroo Island Courier Sat 2-9-1911]

*Proposed Institute Improvements

A public meeting was called for Monday August 6th by the Penneshaw Institute Hall Committee for the purpose of discussing improvements needed at the Institute Hall.

The Chairman (Mr E L Bates) presided and after some discussions and many suggestions, it was decided to build two cloak rooms and improve the present building by putting on a new roof, putting down a new floor and a better lighting system.

Arrangements for these improvements are left in the hands of the Committee who will no doubt carry them out satisfactorily. [Ref: The Kangaroo Island Courier 11-8-1934]

*Penneshaw branch of the CWA celebrated its 5th birthday on 2 December.

The hall which had been painted and calsomined by a band of Progress Association workers looked very clean and fresh. The floral decorations were beautifully arranged showing much time spent by CWA members. [Ref: Kangaroo Island Courier 8-12-1950]
