Das frühere Swinemünde war bis zum Zweiten Weltkrieg das drittgrößte deutsche Ostseebad, aber auch ein bedeutender Wehrmachts- und U-Boot-Flottenstützpunkt. Diesen militärischen Einrichtungen galt ein Luftangriff am 12. März 1945, bei dem die Stadt großenteils zerstört wurde. Der Leuchtturm wurde nicht getroffen. Zwischen 4.500 und 23.000 Menschen verloren das Leben - genaue Zahlen lassen sich nicht ermitteln, da die Stadt mit Flüchtlingen überfüllt war. Seit dem 6. Oktober 1945 gehört der Ort zu Polen.

The former Swinemünde was until World War II the third largest german seaside resort at the Baltic coast, but at the same time an important army and submarine base. These military installations were the main target of an allied air raid on March 12, 1945, that destroyed large areas of the city. The lighthouse was not hit. Between 4,500 and 23,000 people lost their lives - there are no exact numbers because at that time, the city was overcrowed by refugees, nobody knew how many. Following the Potsdam Agreement, the city belongs to Poland since October 6, 1945.
