Georgia Strait Herring Fishery, 2010

Maybe we can pillage the ocean forever without affecting its ecology. After all, we have experts managing it. (Experts also managed the Atlantic cod fishery, by the way).

 

A few sea lions could occasionally be seen. I'll go out on a limb and suggest that they were not welcome. No doubt it was the herring activity that also brought the orcas by last week.

 

Two or three decades ago this scene would have included a few float planes with their Japanese passengers carrying suitcases full of money to buy up herring roe.
