Kadykchan
Kadykchan is a city in the Russian far east: completely abandoned after the after an explosion in the local coal mine killed six workers in 1996 and the mine - already close to unprofitable - was completely closed. The winters hit around -60 Celsius in this part of the world, and after most people moved out and the central heating and power was switched off it's pretty damn hard to survive. Except for the occasional tourist, in 2014 the place completely deserted.
The site is large: 10-15 apartment buildings, a hospital, shops, a school and town hall. Most things have been stripped, but it's still possible to see hints of what used to be.
I spent a few fantastic hours here in 2014. I would have loved to spend more time (one lady spent a couple of days exploring - www.youtube.com/watch?v=7vXJa0TxIrE also has some great shots of the capital of the oblast - Magadan - and a nearby town called Susuman), but because I was on a deadline I had to keep it snappy.
