Jacaranda

'Tis most definitely Jacaranda season again here in these parts, with our cities and countryside exploding in lilac hues thanks to these beautiful trees.

The Jacaranda’s hold on the city and its imagination is so firm that the tree is often mistaken for one of our Australian natives; but it is endemic to South America.

I read that a former director of the Brisbane City Botanical Garden, Walter Hill, brought some seeds off a shipping captain and planted them there in 1864. Together with further human assisted plantings, the trees quickly spread across the country as their papery seeds were carried by the wind.

In a few weeks, we will have our own 'purple rain', as the flowers fall delicately to the ground. I always find that to be emotional and touching time.

Growing to around 20 m.
