In memory of Akin
I've just learned that at Marwell Wildlife Sanctuary in the UK, the last Amur leopard there has died. Staff had named him Akin. This is very sad news.
I would always make sure to visit him when travelling back home if I could include a trip to Marwell. He had been at the sanctuary for 20 years.
Over the years, the Amur leopard has been hunted mercilessly, its homelands gradually destroyed by unsustainable logging, forest fires, road building, farming and industrial development.
But! Recent research shows conservation work is having a positive effect and wild Amur leopard numbers are believed to have increased, though there are still only around 100 adults in the wild, in Russia and north-east China.
