Luzern to Goschenen, Gotthard Line, 10 March 1980

10 March 1980 was a train riding and photography trifecta for me. I rode from Luzern to Milan and back, south via the Gotthard line and north via the Simplon and Lotschberg

tunnels.

This album shows part 1 of the trip, from Luzern, where I was staying, to Goschenen at the north portal of the Gotthard Tunnel. It was cloudy in Luzern, and snowing at Goschenen. I rode the train that was due out of Luzern at 0818. My notes say we were a minute late, but the train had arrived, had the engine that brought it in cut, and a new one added to the other end, in 6 minutes. The SBB knows how to switch.

The northern approach to the Gotthard had several spirals, but my photos don't show them. I shot several trains in Goschenen in the space of about an hour or so between the time my train from Luzern arrived and I boarded another that took me on to Milan. Among them was the TEE Gottardo.

Some of my shots from this day are on 6x6 cm slides, which I have not yet scanned.
